How to Tie the Double Uni Knot (Braid to Leader)
You may be wondering how to attach your leader to your main line without using hardware such as a swivel. The answer is simple: tie a strong, reliable connection knot. While there are several knots that can accomplish this task, our favorite — and the one we use regularly — is the Double Uni Knot.
The Double Uni Knot is strong, dependable, and extremely versatile. It works well in both saltwater and freshwater applications and, with a little practice, can be tied in under one minute. It is especially effective when connecting braided line to monofilament or fluorocarbon leader. The knot creates a smooth, low-profile connection that passes through guides cleanly and maintains excellent strength.
Follow these simple steps:
Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Align the leader and main line parallel to one another, overlapping them several inches as shown in the diagram.
-
Using the mono or fluorocarbon leader, form a loop and wrap the tag end around both lines four to five times. Pull snug but do not fully tighten.
-
On the opposite side, form a loop with the braided line and wrap it seven to eight times around both lines. Pull snug.
-
Moisten both knots with water or saliva to reduce friction and heat, then slowly pull the standing lines in opposite directions. The two knots will slide together. Make sure the coils are tight and evenly stacked.
-
Trim the tag ends close to the knot.
Once seated properly, the finished knot should look clean and compact. Here is a great video demonstration on how to tie the double unit knot:
When to Use the Double Uni Knot
-
Connecting braid to mono or fluorocarbon leader
-
Fly fishing applications
-
Lure casting setups
-
Inshore and offshore fishing
-
Anytime you want to avoid using swivels
The Double Uni is a great all-around connection knot, especially for anglers who value simplicity and reliability.
Advantages
-
Eliminates hardware for a more natural bait presentation
-
Maintains approximately 85–90% of line strength when tied correctly
-
Does not slip when properly seated
-
Slim profile passes through rod guides easier than bulkier connection knots
-
Easy to tie on the water, even in windy conditions
Disadvantages
-
Not the absolute strongest braid-to-leader knot available (FG Knot tests stronger)
-
Requires proper coil stacking and tightening technique
-
Mono can stretch slightly when paired with low-stretch braid
At the end of the day, the Double Uni Knot is a simple, dependable connection that has stood the test of time. Once you practice tying it a few times, muscle memory kicks in and you’ll be able to tie it confidently on the water.
